Why do most Malaysian Cats have no tail?

When it comes down to being the “ultimate companion,” domestic cats sits high atop the list for many people. Unlike they’re canine counterparts, cats seem to have a unique personality of their own that distinguishes them from other domestic animals. This personality tends to get a bad wrap at times because of the animal’s solitary nature, but cats are just as loyal to their owners as dogs are.

One of the most prominent features of any cat is it’s tail. The tail is an advanced part of the body that provides balance and agility. When it comes to pure athleticism, no other animal on the planet is as genetically gifted than a wild or domestic cat. Did you know that there are many cat breeds that do not have a tail or a very short tail to say the least? That’s right! Of course, some of this comes by design, depending on the agenda of the pet owner. Other times, bobtail or cats with no tail, is genetically induced.

“Genetics & How It Plays A Crucial Role”

Genetics are the key to all life forms and the modern day domestic cat is no exception. Genetics are the life force of all organisms no matter the breed, race, color, or creed. When it comes to cats, genetics play a large role in the development of the animal. This can be for the eye color, body color, stripes, mentality, and for the length of the animal’s tail. So what about the cats here in Malaysia. If you haven’t noticed most cats here actually lack a tail or have one that is really just a “nub”. The biggest reason for this comes from genetics in-general. In other words, the animals have a unique DNA structure as well as chromosomes. Male/Female cats will pass down this distinct trait to their offspring.

Other fascinating theories that can be applied to the underdevelopment of the animals tail is that many of them live in poor habitats. Just like in humans, conditions similar to these definitely play a considerable role in the development process. In a number of Malaysian communities or for a large are within the Asian region, cats are in high abundance. Living without a true home as well as being in slightly poor conditions, the domestic cat has digressed physically. Since many of these cats live out on the streets, the lack of good quality foods are hard to come by. Just like humans to some degree, cats can be a reflection of their natural environment. Did you know…

  • Feral cats in Singapore have the exact kinky tail
  • Siamese cats didn’t naturally have straight tails, but was more so bred for generations to achieve their distinct features
  • Inbreeding caused many of the deformities, which is a recessive trait

In Conclusion”

Domestic or feral cats in these specific areas manifested from the behavior of human interactions in many cases. On the other hand, features such as color and behavior are already hard wired well within the animals DNA structure. So all the cats you see around Malaysia that have no tail are like that because their parents had no tails.
